The background of the paintings is a pure gold leaf underlay. This is how icons were painted in the fifteenth century. The paintings are one-of a kind originals
These frames are hand-finished by the artist in gold leaf with a red undercolor. The frames are lightly distressed to show a bit of the red color underneath.
